01  N.B  In this checklist "endemic" refers to the nird's Australian status, not that it is endemic to the region.
1.    Effectively monotypic; diemenensis, formerly Tasmania, Extinct ca 1865
2.     Also referred as the Blue-breasted Quail [e.g. Clements]
3.    Introduced from Indian sub-continent.  Feral populations in region.
4. Introduced from Europe.  Probably from the A. p. platyrhynchus subspecies, known to be widespread throughout Europe, Asian & North America.    A. p. conboschas is known from Greenland only.
5. Some discrepancy between the 2 major authorities as to subspecies extant:  IOC maintains only 2 races, superciliosa and pelewensis; Clements has 3, superciliosa, pelewensis and rogersi [covering Australia].
6 Clements has this greve as montypic, with the New Zealand bird coming under the one umbrella; IOC has split the two, with the New Zealand bird assigned to P.p. rufopectus.
7 IOC has accepted the BOU name, Rock Dove, to avoid confusion with Australian Petrophassa species. Introduced from Western Palearctic.
8 First introduced to Melbourn in the 1860s with subsequent releases in other Australian cities.  Originates from the Indian Sub-continent/ South-east Asia.
9 Clements has it as a monotypic endemic; IOC agree that it is an endemic but have it spilt into three races.
10 A taxonomy currentty in flux.  Has recently been split from the Common Emerald Dove Chalcophaps indica by some [e.g. IOC] but remains part of the C.i. family among others [e.g.Clements].  This latter authority has the dove as C.i. longirostris.
11 Clements has this frogmouth as montypic ; IOC has thre races.
12 Clements maintain three races:: nigripennis, exul and mystacalis spread across Australia, north and central Solomon Island and New Caledonia.  IOC has it as a monotypic endemic.
13 IOC has it as monotupic & endemic Clements records that it winters in the Lesser Subdas Island [Indonesia] and therefore not endemic to Australia.
14 Recently renamed Pacific Swift from Fork-tailed Swift.
15 Repoted to Wildlife Species List [Dept. of Environment & Resource Management] on 10 May 1995.  No further details recorded.
16 IOC has two races; Clements maintains it as monotypic.
17 Formerly known as the Jabiru.
18 Recently elevated to full species by a number if Australian authorities.  Several global authorities have it as a subspecies of Ardea alba.
19 IOC has this as a monotypic endemic; Clements maintains two races and ectends its distribution into Indonesia.
20 IOC maintains 2 races of which nigripes is distributed from the Sundas Island to Australia and New Zealand; Clements has three races of which immaculata is the Australian race.
21 Australian authorities concur with the IOC as to its name [Nankeen] and its scientific nomenclature; Clements maintains Rufous Nigh-heron listed as N.c. hilli.
22 Known more simply as the Australian Ibis by some authorities [e.g. Clements].
